1722 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Nicholas Rowe

Matthew Concanen, in "A Letter to a Critick, in Defence of the Modern Poets" 1722; Universal Journal No. 21 (29 April 1724).

Great and unmatch'd was laurell'd Rowe in Praise,
At once to merit and adorn the Bays:
Like some smooth Riv'let flow'd his easy Strain,
Which neither Rocks disturb, nor Floods distain;
Such Depth and Clearness in his Verses meet,
Strong as the Stream, and as its Murmurs sweet.
