1763 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. John Langhorne

Richard Shepherd, in "Epistle to Robert Lloyd" St. James's Magazine 2 (May 1763) 198-99.

The gentle L—N, laureat volunteer,
L—N on all occasions ever near,
In Prologue, Eulogy, or Epitaph,
Natal or nuptial hymn, to cry or laugh,
For seven revolving years spruce 'prentice bound,
To deal out cloth per yard, or plumbs per pound,
The taste of each kind customer had hit
With the bright tinsel of some level wit;
Till from the counter rais'd to fill the chair,
He had shone in city annals a lord-mayor.
