1776 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

Anonymous, "Verses written under Dr. Samuel Johnson's PIcture, prefixed to Johnsoniana, or his Collection of Bon Mots" Public Advertiser (6 April 1776).

Is this the human face divine, where sit
The Smile of Humor, and the Grace of Wit?
While moral Eloquence inspires the Strain,
We mask thy billowy Roll, majestic Main;
Here the rude Clouds thy solemn Scene deform,
And Genius frets — a Puddle in a Storm.
