1778 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Gen. John Burgoyne

Anonymous, "A Temporary Parody on certain Verses of Dryden" Public Advertiser (23 July 1778).

Two mighty Generals, in one Country born,
By different Ways their native Soil adorn;
The FIRST is fam'd for Rashness and Bombast,
Delay and Dulness dignify the LAST.
That both excel, — we find it to our Cost,
For that an Army, this an Empire lost.
The Force of Error could no further go;—
George! — get a third, and h—g the former two.
