1783 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Anonymous, "Billa Vera. An Epigram" Public Advertiser (6 March 1783).

Quoth Fox to Burke, "We've made a Rout,
On Purpose to get in;
But those who're in will keep us out,
And that's their crying Sin."
"Alas!" adds Burke, "'tis clear as Light,
That we've been Party-Tools;
And Common-Sense, who's always right,
Says now, we're Knaves and Fools."
