1783 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Helen Maria Williams

William Hayley, "From Mr. H—y—y, to Miss W—ll—ms, upon her wishing to see his House" Public Advertiser (18 July 1783).

Fair Nymph, whose Verses sweet and free,
Express a flatt'ring Wish to see
A rhymng Hermit's Dwelling,
Haste to his Cell with Friendship's Pace,
His Arms are open to embrace
His kind, poetic Helen.

FROM THE SAME TO MISS W. WITH NOSEGAY, AFTER READING EDWIN AND ELTRUDA.
To deck the tender Guest who grac'd
These cheerful, tho' sequester'd Bowers,
The Hermit sends, in eager Haste,
A Nosegay of the richest Flowers—
This slight Return for thy sweet Lays,
Nymph of enchanting Song, forgive;
For ill my fading Gift repays
Thy Present, which will ever live.
