1790 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Capel Lofft

W. G., "On Burke's Reflections" Public Advertiser (17 December 1790).

Burke writes a Pamphlet shrewdly pen'd,
Which doth "our brother Protestants"* offend,
Who aiming to o'erthrow this happy State,
Honour the Author with their direst hate:
But surely they want champions, or are soft,
To trust their "righteous cause" to "C— L—;"
A Forum Orator; — and as a Writer—
As fit to answer Burke, — as wear a Mitre!
