1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

Anonymous, "Lines, written in a blank Leaf of a Presentation Copy of Boswell's Life of Johnson" Public Advertiser (1 April 1791).

Gay BOSWELL! in this votive tablet of thine
United the Friend and Philosopher shine;
Down the full stream of time they together shall glide,
Still shall JOHNSON be seen with his SCOT at his side;
And while Fame, in thy lines, shall his praises resound,
For learning and virtue for ever renown'd,
This favour to thee shall fair Friendship impart,
To ennoble at once both thy head and thy heart.
