1762 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Tobias Smollett

Periwigomenos, "A Bone for the Critical Reviewers" St. James's Chronicle (22 June 1762).

SIRS,
If you are not connected with the Gentry exposed in the following Lines, you will insert them in your Paper, and thereby oblige
Your constant Reader, &c.

Pick at this, ye vile Scribblers! ye Catchers at Pence!
Ye Retailers of Nonsense! ye Manglers of Sense!
Hide your Heads, Sons of Genius! for now be it known,
Queen Dulness has firmly establish'd her Throne.
On the first of each Month her fat Heralds appear,
From the Brows of young Bards the green Laurels to tear;
In vain Wit and Learning assert their just Claim,
"Your Wit is Burlesque, and your Learning is tame:"
But tip them a Fee, or enlist in their Clan,
Then 'tis "Fine! Bravo! Glorious! Aye, this is the Man:"
Be the Stuff what it will, to the Skies they extoll it,
MACPHERSON'S Verse-Prose, or a Story by SMOLLETT.
