1774 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Thomas Warton

Anonymous, "Ne Quid Nimis" St. James's Chronicle (9 April 1774).

Learning to Wine may be compar'd:
Whoe'er of both drinks deep and hard,
Wild and distracted reels and prances,
And teems with topsy-turvy Fancies:
But he who takes a chearful Cup,
To keep his mounting Spirit up,
Diffusing Joy and Recreation,
Is better for the brisk Potation:
Reader, Exempli gratia, look
In Bryant's and in Warton's Book,
You see at once, the Proofs are such,
Who drinks enough, and who too much.
