1781 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Isaac Watts

Anonymous, "On Dr. Watt's Monument in Westminster Abbey" St. James's Chronicle (26 April 1781).

How small the Honour that thy Bust should stand
With Chiefs and Sages rang'd on either Hand,
Or that this stately Temple should enshrine
Thy Name among the Favourites of the Nine?
Angels of Light, and Saints enthron'd on high,
Long since have hail'd Thee to th' empyreal Sky,
With whom thy Soul enjoys eternal Rest,
With peerless Glories crown'd, and Joys immortal blest.
