1794 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Charlotte Smith

A Lady, "Addressed to Mrs. C. Smith" St. James's Chronicle (27 November 1794).

When thy sweet Sonnets I peruse,
What soft emotions fill my breast!
Fair Child of Nature is thy Muse,
In all the charms of Fancy drest.

Such lively colours it displays,
Some pencil well the lines might trace;
And glowing mark thy beauteous lays,
In all the forms of Love and Grace.

To paint the feelings they inspire!
Ah, no! — 'tis not the gift of Art!
'Tis heaven-born Nature tunes thy lyre,
And speaks its language to the heart.
