1788 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Jonathan Swift

Anonymous, "Epigram on Dean Swift" St. James's Chronicle (7 June 1788).

Dean Swift (I forget where) asserts in a trice
(Perhaps you'll say — somewhat too hasty)
"That those who have nasty Ideas — are nice,
That those who have nice ones — are nasty."
Could this be prov'd true, as I think it well can,
I'm sure, then, the Dean was a monstrous nice man.
