1800 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir James Bland Burges

Anonymous, "Five Latin Lines, on Four English Poets, with a Translation" St. James's Chronicle (29 May 1800).

Poetis nos laetamur tribus,
Si vis amice scire quibus,
Pye, Petrus-Pindar, parvus Pybus.
Sin ultra tres tam claros pergis,
Quartus sit James Bland Burges.

Three Poets with us
Make no little fuss
Peter Pindar, Pye, and Small Pybus.
But if to name a fourth you urge us
It sure must be Sir James Bland Burges.
