1799 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Dr. John Wolcot

Anonymous, "To Peter PIndar, on reading his intended satyrical Lines addressed to Miss Hannah More" The True Briton (29 October 1799).

See venom'd PETER from his murky cell,
Where deadly Imps and horrid Demons dwell,
Like a destructive Pestilence appear,
With Envy, Hatred, Malice in the rear.
Looking with scowling brow the regions round
To strike the GREAT and GOOD with many a wound;
But MORE, irradiate with celestial light,
Waves her bright Plume and puts the Host to flight!
MOORE of MOORE-HALL,
Who slew the Dragon of Wantley.
