RICHARDSON. The delineation of character in his romances, exceeds that of any writer ancient or modern: but the portraying the passions peculiar to certain personages in a long novel in prose, is easier than making a strong impression from the same effort in the space of a play. Shakspear's great excellence is his character drawing — Richardson is equally original.
