1772 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Shenstone

Anonymous, in "Catalogue of the most celebrated Writers" Letters concerning the present State of England (1772) 396.

SHENSTONE. A writer of rather placid and agreeable parts, than shining and original ones. His Pastoral Ballad is the best poem of the kind in the English Language, being unrivalled in that beautiful simplicity, wich destroys not elegance of composition; Rural Elegance is a fine ode, and Jessey a pathetic elegy.
