1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Robert Merry

The Parson, "On the rumoured Marriage between Miss Brunton of Covent Garden Theatre, and Mr. Merry" Whitehall Evening Post (21 June 1791).

If report may be trusted — which seldom proves true,
It will shortly make ONE — of what lately was TWO;
And together repos'd under Hymen's sweet shade,
May the forms of an Actress and Poet be laid,
Then delay not, fair Damsel, becoming a wife—
For the moment you wed — you'll be — MERRY for life!
