1815 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

James Hogg

John Wilson to Jane Wilson, June 1815; Mary Wilson Gordon, Christopher North (1862; 1894) 121.

On Tuesday morning I walked to Hogg's, a distance of about eight miles, fishing as I went, and surprised him in his cottage bottling whiskey. He is well, and dressed pastorally. His house is not habitable, but the situation is good, and may become very pretty. There being no beds in his domicile, we last night came here, a farmer's house about a quarter of a mile from him, where I have been treated most kindly and hospitably. The house and entertainment something de la Wastdale, but much superior. I have risen at seven o'clock, and am preparing to take a complete day's fishing among the streams near St. Mary's Loch.
