1718 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Dr. Henry Stubbe

Thomas Hearne, 8 October 1718; Reliquae Hearniae, ed. Bliss (1869) 2:86.

The famous Mr. Henry Stubbe did not understand French, as himself confesseth in a letter I have seen, under his own hand, dated Sept. 12, 1675, in which he says, that his great uncle was he that lost his right hand in queen Elizabeth's time. He says, that he did not know rightly how to spell his name.
