1801 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Helen Maria Williams

Alexander Thomson, in The British Parnassus, at the Close of the Eighteenth Century (1801) 81 & n.

For WILLIAMS, my tongue might have brought into view
Her Song on the Conquest of wealthy PERU,
And that Lyrical piece, of no ev'ry-day pow'r,
Which her fancy suppos'd to be found in the Tow'r....

There is an immense difference between the two pieces here mentioned as belonging to Miss Williams. Peru was purposely omitted, as unworthy of a place among the Epic Poems, but the omission of the other was entirely accidental, as it is perhaps equal, in Lyrical spirit, to any of the Odes I have chosen to notice.
