1733 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Alexander Pope

Anonymous, "On his being the Author of the Essay on Man" Gentleman's Magazine 3 (June 1733) 319.

The muse, O P—, some cynick reas'ners blam'd
And beauties which they could not taste, defam'd:
But when to verse, philosophy you join,
Thy force of reason proves the muse divine.

So gold, the worth unknown, to some appears,
'Till a new lustre from the mint it bears;
Then with devotion they the coin behold,
George gives the stamp, and adds new worth to gold.
