1773 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Hoole

Orlando, "To Mr. Hool, on reading his Translation of Orlando Furioso" Gentleman's Magazine 43 (February 1773) 94.

Though Ariosto, with an easy hand,
Had every various colour at command,
Drew all the powers of fancy to his aid,
And with the whole compos'd a matchless maid;
Yet fair Angelica delights no less,
Drawn by thy pencil in an English dress.
Surpassing every the most daring thought,
Her present robe thine easy skill has taught,
(How sweetly there the mingled colors glow)
O'er her fine form in ample folds to flow.
