1790 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. John Brown

L. L., "On Barbaross, acted at York Theatre" Gentleman's Magazine 60 (April 1790) 357.

While in rank fustian at his trembling slaves,
Enormous tyrant, Barbarossa raves,
Proud as Archdeacon from his lofty stall,
Or York's stern Priest, Lord Paramount o'er all;
Strip off the pompous turban from his head,
And place the Cap of Folly in its stead.
