1833 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Tennant

Allan Cunningham, in "Biographical and Critical History of the Literature of the last Fifty Years" The Athenaeum (16 November 1833) 772.

WILLIAM TENNANT, in his very original poem of Anster Fair, gave Frere and Byron more than a hint for Whistlecraft and Beppo: nor is it unjust to say, that the imitators have not at all equalled the life, the naivete, the ludicrous dashed with the solemn, and the witty with both, which characterize the poet of Dollar.
