1808 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Little, sylphid, fluttering creature,
Floating light on airy wing,
Well I know each pigmy feature,
For, alas! I've felt thy sting!

Thou art, all-inspiring Cupid,
Friendly to both young and old;
And though blind, thou are not stupid,
If all's true of thee that's told.

Pretty, little, tiny fellow!
Take this letter to my love:
Tell her, lisping straggler, tell her,
She is Venus, you her dove!
