1805 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Peter Bayley

Anonymous, Review of Bayley, Poems; Poetical Register and Repository of Fugitive Poetry for 1803 (1805) 443.

We have read, with great pleasure, the poems of Mr. Bayley. Good poetry is not a common commodity, and when it comes in our way we receive it with a high degree of satisfaction. Mr. Bayley is no ordinary writer. His compositions are generally polished and vigorous: they every where shew the scholar and the man of taste. Some few ideas seem to have been borrowed, though perhaps unconsciously, from preceding writers.
