1808 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Christopher Anstey

Anonymous, Review of Anstey, Poetical Works; Poetical Register for 1808-09 (1812) 548-49.

The poetical merits of the late Mr. Anstey are so well known that it is quite unnecessary for us to touch upon them. Were we to say that he was one of the most polished and most witty of our writers, we should say no more than the truth, but we should say nothing with which every body has not long been acquainted. This edition of his works is elegant and complete, and the life is written with much taste, neatness of style, and filial affection.
