1808 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Felicia Hemans

Anonymous, Review of Hemans, Poems; Poetical Register for 1808-09 (1812) 550.

Much poetry is not to be expected in poems, written, as these were, between the ages of eight and thirteen. It is sufficient if such productions give promise of something better in future; that promise we think is given by Miss Brown's verses. They are pretty, and not devoid of poetical ideas. We recommend to the fair authoress to form her taste upon the best models, and to beware of being too easily satisfied with her own compositions.
