1721 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Butler

Anonymous, "On Setting up Mr. Butler's Monument in Westminster Abbey" 1721 ca.; D. Lewis, Miscellaneous Poems by Several Hands (1726) 18.

While Butler, needy Wretch! was still alive,
No gen'rous Patron would a Dinner give:
See him, when starv'd to Death, and turn'd to Dust,
Presented with a Monumental Bust!
The Poet's Fate is here in Emblem shown;
He ask'd for Bread, and he receiv'd a Stone.
