1726 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Thomas D'Urfey

Anonymous, "Epitaph on Tom Durfey" D. Lewis, Miscellaneous Poems by Several Hands (1726) 6.

Here lies the Lyrick, who, with Tale and Song,
Did Life to threescore Years and ten prolong;
His Tale was pleasant, and his Song was sweet;
His Heart was chearful — but his Thirst was great.
Grieve, Reader, grieve, that he, too soon grown old,
His Song has ended, and his Tale has told.
