1798 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Robert Lowth

Richard Hurd, "Warburton and Lowth" 1798 ca.; Commonplace Book in Kilvert, Memoir of the Life and Writings of Richard Hurd (1860) 249.

Dr. Lowth's friends affected to bring his merits into competition with those of Warburton; but there was no relation of equality, or even likeness, in their talents, to be the ground of such a competition. Warburton had that eagle-eyed sagacity, which pierces through all difficulties and obscurities; and that glow of imagination which gilds and irradiates every object it touches: Lowth had the amiable accomplishments of a man of parts and a scholar; but in no transcendent degree of eminence in either character.
