1731 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Richard Bentley

Anonymous, "On Dr. B—y's Homer, which was preserv'd from Fire" Grub-Street Journal (9 December 1731).

While o'er my page dogmatic B—Y stands,
The flame prepares to snatch me from his hands:
But fortune envy'd, when she saw my joys,
And in a moment all my hopes destroys:
From the kind purpose of the fire I'm torn,
And to the wretched lot of MILTON borne.
