1721 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Butler

Samuel Wesley, 1721 ca.; Joseph Ritson, English Anthology (1793-94) 1:336.

While BUTLER, needy wretch! was yet alive,
No gen'rous patron would a dinner give:
See him, when starv'd to death and turn'd to dust,
Presented with a monumental bust!
The poet's fate is here in emblem shown,
He ask'd for bread, and he receiv'd a stone.
