1800 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Boyse

Thomas Dermody, in "The Pursuit of Patronage" Poems Moral and Descriptive (1800) 54.

In a dark garret where the biting cold
No cheerful hearth allays, poor BOYSE behold!
A blanket skewer'd his shiv'ring shoulder wears,
Outrageous Hunger at his vitals tears;
Not one dry crust his tuneful toil requites,
And e'en in famish'd misery he writes,
Yet, FIELDING'S candid judgment may sustain
The doubted value of his lofty vein!
