1822 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Wilson

James Harley, in The Press, or Literary Chit-Chat. A Satire (1822) 28 &n.

Wilson, though freer from the Lakish cant,
Is still a little Lakish in his chant.
His City of the Plague is but De Foe
Deprived in part of his too ardent glow.

* Wilson's muse is agreeable, but not of the first order. Let us hope that in his future productions he will be less profuse of vulgar oaths, than in his City of the Plague.
