1825 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

James Montgomery

Anonymous, in "Literary Thermometer. A Dream" The New York Mirror 3 (3 September 1825) 43.

Next came MONTGOMERY; pale and dejected — a prayer-book in one hand, and a manuscript in the other. Upon the latter was written, "The Wanderer of Switzerland." From among its leaves he took a burning glass wet in a plain silver frame, and drew the focus leisurely upon the thermometer. It did not rise above forty; which surprised me, until I observed that the glass was wet with the tears which the possessor shed, which in some measure, destroyed its accumulating effect. He made but one trial, and turned meekly away with his eyes bent devoutly upon his prayer-book.
