1822 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Rogers

James Harley, in The Press, or Literary Chit-Chat. A Satire (1822) 70 &n.

Rogers hath sweetly sung, and, though his verse
Hath lately grown less musical and terse,
Yet, for the strains of other days we'll bear
E'en Human Life or Italy to hear.

* "Human Life" is the "Pleasures of Memory" in its dotage. I may be wrong in attributing "Italy" to the same author. It is pretty in parts, but almost too pamby-namby even for Rogers.
