1721 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Abraham Cowley

Judith Cowper Madan, in "Progress of Poetry" 1721; London Magazine 28 (1759) 156.

While COWLEY'S lays with sprightly vigour move,
Around him wait the gods of verse and love;
So quick the crowding images arise,
The bright variety distracts our eyes:
Each sparkling line, where fire with fancy flows,
The rich profusion of his genius shows.
