ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Elegant Extracts: Spenser.

Elegant Extracts: or Useful and Entertaining Passages in Poetry. 2 Vols.

Rev. Vicesimus Knox

In this edition of the extracts (first published in 1789), Vicesimus Knox includes 100 excerpts from Spenser, the first 87 arranged alphabetically for easy reference ("Adonis's Garden" through "Wrath"); they are followed by some lengthier extracts from the Faerie Queene.

This frequently-reprinted collection, replete with imitations of Spenser and Milton, was long used as a textbook.
