ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Poetical Works.

Works of the British Poets. With Lives of the Authors by Ezekiel Sanford. 50 Vols.

Edmund Spenser

The first American edition of the British poets reprints the first book of The Faerie Queene and excerpts from II and III, part of Amoretti, the Epithalamion, and two of the Hymnes. The Shepheardes Calender is omitted, perhaps an indication of just how unfashionable it was in this era.

Ezekiel Sanford may have decided to abridge Spenser to make room for other earlier writers, for Chaucer, Gower, Raleigh, Drayton, Drummond, and the Fletchers are represented.
